Grand Mosque (Cami-i Kebir)
It is the oldest mosque
in Mardin. A grooved dome covers
three naves parallel to the
south wall. The dome is built on
six piers. Only five cross-vaulted
liwans in the north survived to
our times. There is a liwan with
a small selsebil (a
fountain with ornaments)
surrounded by porches.
The minaret of the mosque was built during the rule of Kudbeddin İl-Gazi of Artuklu (1176). Another Artuklu ruler Melik Salih (1312-1362) spared some of his property to the foundation of the mosque. These included 38 shops, one bath, a garden in Bab-I Cedid and some vineyards in the villages of Mardin. As the most important Islamic structure in Mardin Ulu Cami maintains its grandeur today.
.
Zeynel Abidin Mosque
This mosque is known by
the name of Zeynel Abidin, one
of the 13th
generation offspring of Hz.
Mohamed.Z. Abidin’s and his
sister’s tombs are in the
mosque. There is also the holy
visit place of Selman-ı Pak
known as the barber of Hz
Mohamed.
.
Koçhisar Mosque (Kızıltepe Grand Mosque)
Yavlak Aslan of Mardin
Artuklu Dynasty started
construction (1184/1200) and his
brother Artuk Aslan (1200-1239)
completed it. Three naves
parallel to the south wall are
covered over two raves by a 9.75
m diameter dome. The internals,
niche and walls of the mosque
have fine inscriptions.
.
Melik Mahmut Mosque
It covers a rectangular
shaped area separated from
dwellings with narrow streets.
Its main gate with stone works
opens to a small square. The
mosque takes its name from Melik
Mahmut (1367-1368) buried in the
yard of the mosque.
.
Abdullatif
Mosque
It was constructed in
1314 AD by Abdüllatif Bin
Abdullah, one of the aides of
Melik Salih and Melik Muzaffer.
Its minaret was built by
Muhammed Ziya Tayyar Paşa,
Governor ofEgypt. Sultan Avis and
Melik Munsur are both buried
here.
.
Kasımiye
Medresse
It
is just beneath the hill to the
southwest of the town. Cut
stones were used in its
construction. The architectural
style indicates that its
construction started in Artuklu
times and mostly finished.
Although there are some
indicators such as the plan,
stone working style and
ornamental motifs that are not
completely in line with the
relevant features of the Artuklu
period, it is still possible to
give the date as the end of the
Artuklu reign (i.e. towards the
end of the 14th
century).
There is the
possibility that the medresse
was completed by the Akkoyunlu
since it is known by the name of
Kasım (1457-1502), son of
Cihangir.
The structure is actually a complex with its two
story medresse, mosque and tombs.
.
Zinciriye
(Sultan İsa) Medresesi
It is to the north of
Medresse Neighborhood. It was
built in 1385 by Melik Necmettin
İsa bin Muzaffer Davut bin El
Melik Salih. Melik İsa, having
resisted the armies of Tamerlane
was kept here as a captive for
some time.
Stonework in the entrance
of the medresse is striking.
This structure with two yards
and stories is noticeable from a
distance with its sliced domes.
The medresse has Sultan İsa
Tomb and many inscriptions. The
rationale for its construction
on a hill is that it was also
used as an observatory. The
building is also used as a
museum.
.
Şehidiye Medresse and Mosque
It
is in Şehidiye Neighborhood to
the south of the main avenue.
Katip Ferdi states that the
medresse was built by Sultan
Melik Nasruddin Artuk Aslan
(1201-1239) who was also buried
here. Available information and
evidence suggest that the
medresse was completed in the
first half of the 13th
century
The present minaret was
added to the mosque in 1916
.
Sıtti Radviyye (Hatuniyye
Medresesi)
It was
built in the name of
Kutbeddin İlgazi's mother on
the same date together
Sitraziye
mosque.
In the mosque
there is footprint claimed to be
pertaining to H.E. Muhammed.
The tombs make it the most
privileged position.
