MINING AND ENERGY

The most important mine is the phosphate reserves in Mazıdağı and Derik. There are also rich cement stone reserves in the districts of Kızıltepe, Nusaybin and Yeşilli. While Mardin central district and Kızıltepe have brick inputs, basaltic ponza as the basic raw material in cement industry exists in Derik. Finally the district of Nusaybin has oil and natural gas reserves.

Nusaybin HPP generates 36,360,000 kWh/year electricity. Upon the phasing-in of Çağçağ and II. HPP, energy production will reach 33 Gwh/year on 4 Mw

The province of Mardin consumed 457,965,468 kWh energy in 1999. 114,653,730 kWh of this was consumed by industrial and commercial enterprises whereas irrigation facilities consumed 16,138,905 kWh.

56 oil wells operated in Nusaybin produce 35, 000 m3 natural gas a day.

The existence of natural gas in Nusaybin and oil in the neighboring country presents an opportunity for establishing power plants using these inputs.

Mardin is also conducive to the establishment of wind energy facilities since the criteria of 6 m/sec wind blow is generally met in the province.

Finally the province also has potential for solar energy production, but this opportunity hasn’t been exploited sufficiently.
