THE INDUSTRY OF MARDİN TODAY |
The
construction of Mardin Organized
Industrial District was given
start in 1976 to boost the
development of industrial
activities in the province and
the District became active in
1972. Small economic enterprises
in Mardin, which presently
amount to more than 1,000 units
will grow in time parallel to
industrial developments to take
place in the province.

From Production
To
Export
|
In
Mardin there are potentially
competitive sectors such as
foodstuffs, construction,
agricultural machinery, chemical
products, textile-garment, etc.
Further development of economic
activities and the growth of
industry will eliminate such
important problems as
unemployment.

MARTU
GASCONCRETE
LIME AND SANDGRAVEL
(Fastidious
Friend Of Cleanliness) |
These
are the leading manufacturing
branches in Mardin. There are 11
large-scale enterprises in this
sector and 7 of them are
presently active. Products
include cement, clinker,
concrete, concrete pipe,
plaster, lime, brick, tile, etc.
Many
of these products are exported.
Starting from 1985, there was
intensive migration from rural
to urban settlement, a process
that gave momentum to
construction sector. The growth
of construction sector further
supported these industries.
Cement, concrete tile and brick
A
cement factory was established
in Mardin in 1974. The plant
produces 770,000 tons of cement,
590,000 tons of clinker and
concrete annually. There are two
enterprises producing concrete
pipe. These enterprises annually
produce 65,000 tons of pipe,
25,000 tons of fiber pipes,
102,780 m3 cast concrete and
200,000 m3 gas concrete.
Marble and Tile
There are
two tile-manufacturing
enterprises in the organized
district with a capacity of
3,000,000 tiles/year. There is
another enterprise capable of
producing 120,000 m2 marble
panels a year. Two more
enterprises to produce the same
products are presently under
construction..
Lime and Plaster
The
lime factory operating since
1975 produces 80,000 tons of
lime a year. One enterprise on
marble also produces 1,440,000
lime/sandstone a year. Another
enterprise to produce plaster is
presently under construction.
FOOD
AND FLOUR
In
countries and areas whose
economy is based on agriculture,
foodstuffs industry has a
critical role to play and mostly
becomes the first industrial
sector in that area of country
In
1932, three flourmills in
Mardin, two at the center and
one in Midyat, were accorded
incentives within the framework
of then existing “Legislation
for encouraging Industrial
Development”. Shortly after
two more enterprises were opened
to process sesame and produce
sesame oil. The output of these
enterprises met the needs of the
province and also marketed in
other provinces. In the 19th
century there were many wineries
in Mardin and some of them had
very good reputation for
producing high quality wine from
local grapes. This traditional
potential was used in modern
times first in 1980 with the
establishment of Savur Dereiçi
Winery. It must be noted that
wines produced here are exported
and occasionally accorded prizes
for their special taste.
Furthermore,
there were 3 new enterprises
after the 80s processing and
packing red lentil and producing
groats (21,000 tons). One of
these enterprises also produces
starch.
Flour, Grits, Biscuit, Groats and Macaroni
Mardin
has since long had flourmills
and small-scale flour processing
plants in almost each town. At
present, there are 11
enterprises procuring flour and
grits, 4 producing groats, 1
producing macaroni and 1
producing biscuits-candy bars,
etc.
Milk and Milk Products
Yogurt,
cheese and butter used to be
produced traditionally in
domestic environments. At
present,
cheese produced at the central
town, Derik and Kızıltepe is
marketed in İstanbul, İzmir
and Mersin. There is an
enterprise in Mazıdağı
producing cheese and butter. The
one in Kızıltepe produces milk,
cheese and butter.
Oil
There
are two factories producing oil.
One of them is operating on half-capacity.
Feed
There
are three plants in Mardin
producing feed. The output of
these plants is used by
stockbreeders in other
southeastern and eastern
provinces.
METAL
PRODUCTS, MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT
This
industrial branch has an
important place in the economy
of Mardin. Despite its short
past, this sector is a
flourishing one. The sector
emerged in 1990 with the
establishment of an enterprise
producing LPG and household
appliances. The sector further
grew in 1992 with the
establishment of another plant
producing nails, air-conditioning
equipment, solar energy
collectors, pipe, agricultural
machinery, nuts and bolts,
engine parts, hoops, metal parts
and cables. The sector as a
whole consists of many sub-sectors
and manufactures a diversity of
products.
IRON-STEEL BASIC INDUSTRIES
This
is a key branch in the sense
that it influences and directs
many other industrial branches.
The importance of the branch
becomes apparent when one
considers that the outputs of it
are the basic inputs of other
metal working industries.
Furthermore, the sector of
construction also needs inputs
from this sector. In Mardin
there is one enterprise
manufacturing seam pipes.
TEXTILES
The
textile sector is important for
its high employment capacity and
added value it generates.
Mardin and
its area used produced cloth in
small household enterprises
since the 16th
century.
Carpets were woven in Mardin (Center),
Midyat and Şenyurt sub-district
of Kızıltepe. There were yarn
and fiber dye production
connected to carpentry. Midyat
was developed in the production
of raw cloth, laceworks and
angora wool blankets.
As far as
modern textile sector is
concerned, the first enterprise
appearing in Mardin produced
yarn and cotton gin. Previously
yarn needs of small domestic
enterprises were met by the
outputs of small workshops.
In recent
years with the support given by
the State to the exportation of
garment industry products, the
textile industry of Mardin
shifted to garment branch and
many other enterprises emerged
as a result of this shift.
CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND PLASTIC INDUSTRY
There
are 5 enterprises active in this
sector. One
of them, the State-run phosphate
enterprise starting in 1987 in
Mazıdağı had to limit its
production. Another enterprise
produces cream detergent since
the 80s. The enterprise has a
capacity of 3,000 tons/year.
There is another one producing
soap out of
cotton
oil. Others are preparing to
produce detergent ingredients,
sulphohic acid and powder
detergent.
FOREST PRODUCTS AND FURNITURE
This
industry has not grown much in
Mardin. Furniture works are
carried out generally in small
workshops. At present there are
two active larger enterprises in
this sector and another is on
its way.
SMALL INDUSTRIES AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS IN MARDİN
Spices and Dried Fruits
There
are more than 10 enterprises
active in producing foodstuffs.
In Mardin, black pepper,
allspice, coriander, cinnamon
and cumin are most widely used
spices in Mardin mostly in meat
dishes. Coriander is produced in
Mardin. Other important
ingredients used-produced in
Mardin include peppermint, sumac,
mahaleb and pomegranate juice.
In
dried fruit workshops bıttım,
walnut, almond and seeds are
processed for consumption.
Chickpea roasting (leblebi)
has an important place in
Mardin. Roasters process 70-80
tons of chickpea for leblebi production.
Chickpea is roasted for or five
times either with or without
salt and spices to yield
delicious leblebi. Special
pans and roasting machines are
used in this process. What
distinguished Mardin in this
respect is fine workmanship and
multiple roasting process.
Sweets and Halva
There
are 8 work places producing
sweets and halva. This line of
production has a deep-rooted
history in Mardin and these two
delicates are produced mostly in
winter (with addition of
cinnamon, almond, walnut, sesame,
etc.). The total output of
special Mardin grape juice and
walnut halva reach 1 ton a year.
Other products include sweetened
leblebi, Mardin almond
candy and anise sweet (İbzor).
These products are marketed in
other parts of the country and
there is even some exportation
to other countries.
Herbaceous Plants
The
natural endowments of Mardin are
as important as its history,
architecture and morphological
features. The province of Mardin
is rich in terms of the
diversity of its plant species.
The main factor giving rise to
this is the difference in
altitudes and climatic
conditions.
Mankind
has always been keen to use
plants for various purposes
including healing wounds and
illnesses.
Since Mardin could maintain its
mountain and plain culture in
conjunction there has been wide
use of plants for various
purposes. Herbaceous plants used
for medical purposes include the
following: Mahaleb, ikşut, haşişt
il hapta, Şehfit’il acuze, şaırı
cıbbar, hıyar’ıl ıhmar (wild
cucumber), Afs (gall oak), ırkı’s
(licorice root), sığd, ırk il
libe, gözdaşı, ibzor,
canaabis seed, ter’uziye
(Mardin mastic), çide, quince
leave, hılbe, oğulotu, ninhe,
daizy, gıbbeze (mallow) and gızbara.
